Long-Distance Calls
films about, for, with & by seniors

Open Signal, Portland OR, USA, 2018
Also screened at We're Still Here, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History

I was invited by Open Signal to screen I am a beautiful beached whale by the Straits, a film about my grandmothers, and curate a night of films around it. I decided to make it a senior-centric night and created an open call for amateur films about, for, with, by seniors. I also conducted a workshop at Hollywood Senior Center (HSC) about making simple films shot on iPhone. I then met with each senior to edit their film.

At the end of the screening we had a Q&A with the filmmakers present, including seniors from HSC and younger people who made films about their grandparents.

/// This night of films considers what senior-centric content means and questions who filmmakers are, while celebrating the raw, wise, wrinkled, different. Programming includes films from an open call for amateur senior-centric films and films made by seniors following a filmmaking workshop at the Hollywood Senior Center. ///
