Words of Support

Installation
With Jim Crawford, Peter Baptista, Wayne Bralewski, Nathan Costa, and Mark Fareas
Produced as part of Artist in Residence at UMass Dartmouth Center for Visual & Performing Arts, Star Store Campus
New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA

Challenging insider/outsider roles in the art world, Words of Support highlights the perspectives of those who help art systems function. Thoughts from Star Store building security and maintenance staff are installed through the building. To challenge expectations of art and confuse building users, this work was made after and mimicked Bill Seaman's Suspended Sentence, a 2018 exhibition in the building highlighting overlooked objects. More info on Suspended Sentence here and here.

The opening event featured traditional Polish gwampkis by Wayne Bralewski, a Runes writing workshop by Peter Baptista and a conversation booth with Jim Crawford displaying portraits of Jim by Stephanie Mysiuk-Bissen, Kailey Barrows, Katherine Canavan, Braden Putney, and Alexandra Landry from Anthony Fisher's senior painting and drawing classes.

Press - What does an art school custodian think of the students' work? This exhibit tells all - The Standard Times, 20 Feb 2020

Special thanks to Jim, Peter, Wayne, Nathan and Mark for your friendship and collaboration, as well as Paula Medeiros, Anthony Fisher, Viera Levitt, Jessica Fernandes Gomes, CVPA Dean's Office, Taylor Hickey and Bill Seaman
